In the fiscal year 2022, the value of therapeutic equipment and device sales of medical device manufacturers and sellers in Japan amounted to around 2.9 trillion Japanese yen. Diagnostic equipment accounted for the second-highest sales value, at about two trillion yen.
Different types of medical equipment
There are many types of medical equipment for different medical fields and applications. The term therapeutic equipment describes items such as wheelchairs, hospital beds, crutches, nebulizers, or any type of device used for healing purposes of certain conditions. Diagnostic equipment includes medical imaging machines such as X-rays, CT scans, or ultrasound as well as stethoscopes or pulse oximeters. In 2022, the medical devices accounting for the largest share in production value in Japan were medical mirrors, at about 12 percent. Cannulae or catheters of assorted tips configurations used to deliver intravenous (IV) solutions or drain body cavities followed with around 9.4 percent.
Japanese manufacturers of medical devices
Established in 1968 and headquartered in Kobe, Sysmex Corporation is one of the Japanese manufacturers which provides diagnostic technology for in-vitro testing of samples for various medical fields. The company recorded increasing net sales throughout the past years, recently reaching over 400 billion yen. It has subsidiaries also in several European countries. Another major medical device manufacturer is Terumo Corporation founded in 1921. The Tokyo-based company provides services and products in more than 160 countries worldwide.
